Yar’Adua asked to revisit UNIMAID VC selection

By Ndahi Marama

Maiduguri – Even as the nation’s ivory tower has been shut down for about three months, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua who is also the Visitor of the University of Maiduguri has been called upon to intervene and re-visit the issue of selecting the Vice-Chancellor of the institution as the Rule of Law and due process were not followed.

Dr. Aminu Ahmed Rufai, in a letter to the President and made available to Vanguard in Maiduguri stated that, “the matter of selection of the new VC was done in total disregard of due process and the Rule of Law.”

He said that though an advertorial was placed, it was intended to rebut the issues raised in an earlier appeal forwarded to the Visitor, but sadly enough it conveniently sidetracked all issues except two because they are incontrovertible facts.

The issues are: Professor Daura was allowed to remain in an acting capacity for over one year until his selection as the new Vice-Chancellor, contrary to the universities (miscellaneous provisions) Amendment Act 2003 which states in Section 4 that an acting VC in all circumstances shall not be in office for more than six moths;  Professor Daura presided over the meeting of the senate of the university that selected the representatives of that body on the selection Board, contrary to the notion of fair play and justice.

The process of electing the representatives of the Senate on the selection Board flouted the laid down procedure of that body.
