Re-run polls’ N350m: CRPP demands Oshiomhole’s explanation

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—THE Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) in Edo State has asked Governor Adams Oshiomhole to explain where the state government got the N350 million allegedly expended in the House of Assembly re-run election in Akoko Edo constituency 1 penultimate week.

But in a swift reaction, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Abdul Oroh, described the allegation as mischievous and another attempt to tarnish the efforts of the Comrade governor in sanitizing the socio-political situation in the state which, according to him, was “ bastardized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last ten years.”

However, the CRPP in a statement signed by its chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, stated that “we want to know where he got that huge amount of money he spent for the election, just in one constituency while the state is begging for infrastructural developments.

“The people are wallowing in abject poverty, unemployment on the increase, the health facilities are in decay, the roads are worst, potholes, flooding everywhere”.

The group also frowned on what it described as the speed in which the Comrade governor allegedly replaced a community transformer at Lampese which was destroyed allegedly by  AC sponsored armed thugs few days to the election.

“They destroyed the transformer in order to get at the PDP candidate, Mr Agbabi, by all means and that attitude is worrisome.
“ It is now very clear that AC masterminded the mayhem in Akoko Edo during the election and that is why hundreds of women from Okene have been demonstrating, calling on some AC leaders in Akoko Edo to produce their sons who were arrested with arms in Akoko Edo during the election,” the group stated.

But Oroh asserted that “ first of all, the state government never spent a penny in the election. What happened was that because of the manner our people have rejected the PDP in the state, concerned Akoko indigenes, both home and abroad ,contributed financially to ensure victory for the AC candidate.

“And for the thuggery, all those who monitored the election know that the PDP came to rig and imported hundreds of thugs to Akoko Edo, but we are happy that security operatives were on hand to stop them.

“The AC does not need to rig in Akoko Edo at all because we are on ground. It is the PDP that wanted to win by all means. The CRPP is just wasting their time, they cannot tarnish the image and good intentions of the Comrade governor.”
