Benue govt blames fertilizer scarcity on FG

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI – Benue State government has attributed the current scarcity of fertilizer products being witnessed by its teeming farming populace to the inability of the Federal Government to deliver to the state government its due allocation of fertilizer products in the current farming season.

This clarification was made by the Acting Governor of the state, Chief Steven Lawani, while speaking with newsmen in Makurdi.

Lawani, who expressed sadness that farmers have not had enough of the product this year as compared to the previous years, assured that the government has intensified efforts to ensure that the state got its fair share of fertilizer products from the Federal Government to augment the bulk the state government ordered for.

The Acting Governor, who pleaded with the people to remain patient, warned that the government would not tolerate having middlemen frustrate its efforts at addressing the fertilizer needs of the people.

He disclosed that the state government has engaged the services of security operatives to assist its relevant agencies in ensuring that products meant for the state were not hijacked of diverted by middlemen.

Commenting on the cordial relationship that exists between him and Governor Gabriel Suswam, the Acting Governor explained that a crack would never exist in their relationship because they work as a team.
