Armed men steal Okehi council maze

By Isiaka Oyibo

LOKOJA – HEAVILY armed suspected thugs, yesterday, stormed the Okehi Legislative Chambers in Okehi Local Government Area, Kogi State, carting away the legislative maze of the chambers and injuring six councillors.

The thugs, said to have been armed with dangerous weapons such as AK 47 riffles, dane guns and broken bottles, made their way into the hallowed chambers at about 10.30 am, while the lawmakers were deliberating on the proceedings of the day, overpowered the sergeant-at-arms before leaving with the legislative symbol.

Chairman of Okehi Local Government, Abubaker Zubaru, who confirmed the development to our correspondent in a telephone interview, accused one of the Special Advisers to Governor Ibrahim Idris of complicity in the crisis which has sent fears down the spines of residents in the town.

Zubaru said intelligence reports  at “my disposal confirm the fact that the whole incident was masterminded by the Special Adviser all in an attempt to undermine my position as the Chief Security Officer of the local government.”

He said, “those who carried out the attack on the councillors were sponsored thugs,” alleging that their intention is to rubbish the good works “I have been doing for my people”.

However, speaking to newsmen, yesterday in his office, the governor’s special adviser denied the allegations as unfounded saying rather heaping blame for the crisis on him, the chairman should be held responsible as he was “no more in firm grips of governance in the area”.
