Eminent Nigerians across the political divide and members of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, including Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti; Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Olu Falae, Chief Lanihun Ajayi, Senator Moji Akinfenwa and Chief Supo Sonibare were among those who celebrated the 70th birthday of an Afenifere chieftain and top politician, Senator Femi Okurounmu, at Abeokuta, Ogun State, Sunday.
Also in attendance were the Chairman of the State PDP, Chief Joju Fadairo, Chief Aikulola, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo; his wife, Olori Tokunbo Gbadebo and members of Ogun State Executive Council
At the special birthday thanksgiving service at St Paulâ€™s Anglican Parish Church , Sodubi, Abeokuta, Okurounmu was also joined by his wife, Margareth, children and family members to appreciate the grace of God upon his life in the last 70 years while encomiums were showered on him.
Gov. Daniel described Okurounmu as a great mentor, teacher and disciplinarian â€œwho stand for principle and truth at all times.â€
The governor, according to a statement by his Press Officer, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, recalled Okurounmu’s exemplary life in public office â€œas a commissioner in Ogun State under the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo and as a Senator of the Federal Republic.
He stressed that â€œhis life was a great inspiration to the younger generation as he served the state and the nation very well.â€
Daniel, who told the gathering that his relationship with Okurounmu started over 35 years ago as his teacher at the University of Lagos, described him as a brilliant scholar, adding, â€œI am proud to be your student and you taught us well.â€
Daniel, who affirmed that members of PDP in the state belonged to Afenifere, said â€œ with men of impeccable character like Okurounmu, we must continue to draw inspiration and reposition such leaders.â€
