Quit now, Southern youths tell Jonathan

By  Vincent Ujumadu
AWKA— A youth group, Southern Youths Alliance (SYA) has called on Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to resign from office for what it described as his failure to bring peace to the troubled Niger Delta region.

Coordinator of the group, Mr. Nnonyelu Offoma in a statement in Awka, Anambra state yesterday, said it should be borne in mind that the Vice President was chosen for the office because it was expected that he would use the position to resolve the crisis in the region.

It accused the Vice President of being behind the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), adding that as one of the most formidable hopefuls for the presidency in 2015, there is need for him to be clean in all ramifications.

According to Offoma, SYA would organise two million youths from the three zones in the South and march to Abuja to sensitise the world on the issue, should the Vice President fail to resign.

“Our grouse is that the situation in the Niger Delta is eroding the confidence of the North in the Southern president come 2015. Ultimately and if unchecked, the rotational presidency experiment will be totally jeopardized and justly too, by an insecure Northern Nigeria, when it is time for them to transfer power to the South.

Such insecurity is against the soul of the Nigerian constitution at Section 14 (2) (b), which states that the security and welfare of the people is the primary purpose of the government,” the group said
