ABUJA – A telecommunication firm, Mobitel, yesterday, requested a Federal high court sitting in Abuja to nullify the decision by the Federal Government cancelling the licensing process of National frequencies in the 2.3 GHz band by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Mobitel had fulfilled the conditions precedent to the acquisition of the said licence by paying about N1.4billion as prescribed by NCC.
However, the Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili on May 25, 2009 issued a statement canceling the entire process leading to the issuance of the said licence to Mobitel and other successful firms.
According toAkunyili: “Following the resolution of the Ministerial Management Meeting of Friday 22 nd May, 2009 on the above subject matter, I am directed to formally convey the resolution of the meeting that the process for the sale of the 2.3 GHz RF Band has been cancelled (should start over again).
“As a result of that, you are to await the formal release of the band by the National Frequency Management Council (NFMC), the meeting of which was expected to hold tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 May, 2009 at 12 noonâ€.
