Abuja — An Abuja Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, sentenced a 20-year-old furniture maker, Kabiru Lawal, to two months imprisonment for stealing from a church.
Lawal was convicted of stealing iron rods belonging to the Assemblies of God Church, Jikwoyi Phase I, Abuja.
The police prosecutor, Mr Sani Sarki, told the court that Lawal stole the iron rods meant for the construction of the church building.
“The iron was kept inside the uncompleted building in the church premises with other building materials but Lawal disappeared with the iron,’’ Sarki said.
The prosecutor said that Lawal was arrested after a member of the church, Mr Sunday Igboke, reported the theft to the police.
Sarki said Lawal confessed to stealing the iron rods.
“The offence committed by the convict is punishable under Section 288 of the Panel Code,†he said.
Lawal pleaded guilty to the charge and asked for leniency.
The magistrate, Mr Ahmed Ndajiwo, sentenced him to two months imprisonment and an option of N2,000 fine.
