UYO—Academic activities at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, may be grounded, if the abductors of Dr. Ime Udotong, a senior lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, fail to release her, members of the institution’s branch of Academic Staff Union of University, ASUU-UUB, have threatened.
Branch Chairman of ASUU-UUB, Mr. Anyim Nwachukwu, made this known, after academic staff of the institution protested the kidnap of the University don.
Lectures were halted, yesterday, when the lecturers protested round the campus with placards, carrying inscriptions, some of which read, “Protect Our University From Kidnappersm,” “Stop This Unholy Act,” in solidarity with their kidnapped colleague, who was taken away by unknown gunmen some days ago.
He said: “The local congress of ASUU might be constrained to decide on downing tools, if in the next 24 hours, the captors of Mrs. Udotong do not release her to her family. The ultimatum is to ensure that the abductors release the female lecturer and failure would cause the union to adopt actions that would have negative consequences on the running of the school.”
