LAGOS — A 33-year-old commercial bus driver, popularly called Danfo, Mr. Hakeem, was docked at the weekend for allegedly assaulting an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr.Abiodun Onafeko, when he attempted to arrest him for driving on the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, lane at Jibowu, Lagos.
Hakeem, as alleged, was assisted in the assault by his conductor, Mr. James Ige, who after the incident took to his heels.
The driver, a native of Ago Owu, Abeokuta, Ogun State, confessed that he drove his bus with the number plate: AAA47XA on the dedicated lane from Palm grove to Onipanu due to traffic gridlock.
According to him, “My aim wasn’t to injure the traffic official but to evade arrest because I know the implication of the offence.”
Magistrate Yetunde Pinhero however granted the accused persons bail of N100,000 each in the like sum of surety with landed property in Lagos State, must be a relative, gainfully employed but not in Lagos State Government Service, and evidence of tax payment till date and hereby adjourned till Thursday, November 22, 2012.
