It is with nostalgia that I write about a club I have supported from the very first day I heard the word ‘football’. Whether as Spartans, Iwuanyanwu Nationale or now Heartland FC, there is just one club every Imo indigene or, particularly, Owerri resident followed passionately.
PASTOR Idowu Iluyomade is the current head of The Apapa Family, a group of about 1,000 local and international churches within the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG. The Family which was the vision of the General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, started in 1992 at the former Roxy Cinema, Apapa in Lagos with young professionals like Pastor Tony Rapu and others, include chapters in the US, Europe, Oceania and Asia. As part of preparations for this year’s edition of EXCEL 2011, one of the main attractions of the Apapa Family, Pastor Iluyomade bared his mind on the vision, mission and future plans of the group as well as the political situation in the country.
The National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, recently, came under severe verbal attacks from certain quarters because, like Prophet Isaiah in the Bible, he dared to point at those he perceived to be troubling the nation. In this interview with SAM EYOBOKA, apart from setting an agenda for the incoming governments across the country, Oritsejafor refused to join issues with the CPC presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his co-travellers, insisting that ”you cannot build a nation on anything less than the truth.”
Niger State is famed, on the one hand, for Power -on account of two contradistinctive sources of power and noted, on the other, for history -on account of two opposing causes of history. As Power State, she is the source of two voltages: one political, being the birth place of two former Military Heads of State, (IBB and Abdulsalami), and the other hydro-electrical, -being home to the nation’s only two hydro- dams, (Kainji and Shiroro).
IT used to be a man’s prerogative to say something ‘clever’ like “I’m in love with you” to get a woman shag – happy. These days, you’ll be glad to know, that ladles are turning into sexual predators too. Quite a number will do anything to get into a man’s pants. Sexologists agreed that it would be a matter of time when women would start approaching sex in what’s still considered a ‘bloke-like’ manner.

WHAT IS happening to our teenage-girls these days? According to an observer, “They dress in provocative gears that reveal as much flesh as any professional. When the average teen girl is old enough, she wants to go out and have sex where and when she wishes with any lad who takes her fancy. And, her biggest ambition is to sleep with various celebrities – the more atrocious, the better.
In the write-up with the above title, I spoke about how a gsm service provider began to deduct N100 every month from my account for a ring tune I hadn’t consciously ordered for. On the advice of a reader, I did take my phone to one of the outlets of the service provider in question, two weeks ago, to have the ring tune removed. I was attended to by a polite young lady who asked if I didn’t like that particular ring tune. I explained that I didn’t order it, and wanted it removed. She agreed immediately and then fiddled with the keys on my phone. “Ma, I’ve removed it. You won’t feel the effect immediately, but after about four or five hours.”
Dr. Dejo Raimi is not your run-of-the-mill politician. He has traversed the length and breadth of politics in Ibadanland. In fact, it would not be an overstatement to describe him a Metusellah as regards his role in Ibadan politics. An indigene of Ibadan, in spite of all odds, he supported ex-Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State on his re-election bid. But, the dream has been shattered for now, no thanks to the ‘Broom Revolution’ of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that swept PDP away from the South-West. Raimi talks about the unseen hands that led to the sudden death of ‘Akala’s good works’ in the state.
Parliament is the powerful engine room of the grand edifice of democracy. There, is where we make or mar the sovereign. A powerful parliament is an agenda-setting institution. Whatever happens in the hallowed chamber of the people sets the pace for public governance. When we examine it thoroughly, the fight for democracy, all that battle we, my generation, fought on the streets for a return to democracy was in truth for the reconstitution of the parliament and, of parliamentary oversight over the executive.
An infusion of comic relief would not be out of place. Since 1999 when Nigerians embarked on this journey in democratic governance, some names have appeared like permanent fixtures on the firmament.
Friends, let me add the benefit of my time as a student and then resident in the UK – and I live in Lagos now. The first thing that I discovered about UK-born, white, English undergraduates was that all of them did holiday or weekend job to support themselves – including the children of millionaires amongst them. It is the norm over there – regardless how wealthy their parents are. And, I soon discovered that virtually all other foreign students did the same – the exception being those of us status-conscious Nigerians.
