In every election year, the National Assembly has become the epicentre of political intrigues, particularly in filling the principal offices of both chambers. It is commonly asserted that the Constitution reserves no role for the political parties in the composition of these offices.
APC as a ruling coalition
The All Progressives Congress, APC, is the new ruling party in Nigeria, right? Yes and no. Yes, because it is the party that defeated the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the 2015 general elections, winning the Presidency and installing governors in 22 of the 36 states of the federation. It is the party with majority of members in both the Senate and House of Representatives. It will consummate the mandate of the electorate and call the shots for the next four years.

However, the various constituents surprised everyone, sank their differences and worked together to ensure the ouster of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, with Muhammadu Buhari as the arrowhead of the grand coalition of the old North and the ruling political mainstream of South West.
