ABUBAKAR Shekau must be relishing the fact that his rabid behaviour and manifested insanity are earning him the international notoriety he has been yearning for over the years.

In last week’s article, we discussed the adverse consequences of a flagging naira exchange rate, and observed that historical evidence suggests that further naira depreciation would simply deepen poverty nationwide. However, we also noted that available evidence, in fact, suggests that the naira exchange rate has ironically, steadily dipped inversely with vastly improved foreign reserves and extended imports demand cover”.

With all due respect to the Honourable Minister, unless repudiated by him, this statement represents an illusion. And I fervently pray that this is not what he presents every week to the Federal Executive Committee, FEC, as progress report.

God says: “as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9). Jesus goes even further to reveal that the ways of God are not only different from, but often diametrically opposite to, those of man. He insists that: “What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.” (Luke 16:15).

Nigerians have been in the doldrums for far too long that most of us have lost the means to feel for others, we have stripped ourselves of every shred of compassion for our fellow human beings. So in a country where most profess to be religiously minded, we definitely do not practise what we preach.

It is very true that Nigeria’s elite – its political, business and intellectual leadership – has much to answer for its regard of its historical role in shaping a better Nigeria for posterity. Part of the crisis of Nigeria is elite incoherence where it matters.

In a recent group discussion, I came across the concept of the “Say-Do ratio”. It was at an international networking session of women executives and entrepreneurs. It was used in connection to partner participation in marriage by a man who was curious about how much working women expected from their men to feel truly fulfilled.

Some innocent Nigerian school girls were last month abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State. Painfully, the real number of girls involved is unknown. The first report said 100, another 200; yet another version said 234. When a fresh story suggested 276, many people opted to use the term ‘over 200 girls’.

In the fight against corruption where he could have made a good impression, the President’s achievement is far below average.
