AS soon as the news of the removal of former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim filtered into the Web, I got a ping from one Victor Otisi who lives in Cotonou, Benin Republic. He pronounced me a “prophet”. In one of my articles of last week Monday, I had said I would be surprised if Ringim was still in office by the time the write-up was printed.

An elderly ‘auntie’ was wringing her hands in anguish when she read in the papers that the Senate had passed the bill against same sex marriage. “Have our moral values degenerated to such depth that we have to pass a law on that? Are they saying that such a thing goes on in Nigeria?”

As at the end of last week we were informed that Boko Haram attacks have killed at least 935 people since they launched their terror on the people of Nigeria , according Human Right Watch.

The United States of America gets it most of the time. As a federal state, it has developed a highly organized and systematic administrative federalism that permits it to function like a smooth, well-oiled machine. I have always said that Nigeria could learn and incorporate some of the finest attributes of the US system, while of course learning from its equally deep flaws, and thus not re-invent the wheel either way.

Two weeks ago, a new Director General was appointed for the National Orientation Agency (NOA) bringing to an end the tenure of the incumbent-Alhaji Idi Farouk. No reason was given for the development.

When Maryam Babangida, the late spouse of former military dictator, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, launched the programme called Better Life for Rural Women in the 1980s, many naïve Nigerians, particularly women, thought that the scheme would bring a new lease of life to rural women who were usually neglected by the three tiers of government.

Dear Reader, welcome to your regular column. This week, as I conclude this first series I brought you this new year, I will do a recap of the main points raised in the four teachings we have had earlier on.

The appointment of the new Inspector General of Police did not come as a surprise after all, following public outcry that the immediate past IGP had reached his professional nadir and cannot offer anything new or creative to checkmate the menacing force of unreason of members of Boko Haram.

For decades, advertisements have always been a way for individuals, corporate organisations to sell their ideas and products to the general public. The way an advert is packaged goes a long way and has an effect on the consumer. It will determine whether the product will be purchased or not.

My poor beloved country… our own dear native land… nothing captures the craziness of these times like the cover page of one of our local dailies during the week.

Perhaps the Federal Government has been very lucky to have taken many Nigerians, especially the commentators on current affairs on a jolly ride either by share deceit or clever maneuvers.
