Enugu—Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said the National Assembly has broken a 50-year jinx by amending the 1999 constitution.

Ekweremadu made the statement weekend in Enugu while giving a lecture at an award night marking the end of the 2010 press week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Enugu State Council.

He said “we have set a precedence of procedure, such that even those who come after us will not have much difficulty in altering the constitution as the need arises.

“The amendments effected so far hover around electoral reforms, reinforcement of our electoral structure and ironing out confusions and crises not contemplated in our electoral procedure.”

Ekweremadu said section 180 of the constitution had been strengthened to ensure that anyone whose election was nullified and won in a repeat poll, the time the person spent in office before the annulment would be considered part of the person’s tenure.
