ABUJA — The National Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, yesterday announced plans to begin direct tracing of depositors who were yet to retrieve their monies from the 44 liquidated banks to ensure they got their deposits back.
Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDIC, Alhaji Ibrahim Umaru, who disclosed this when SERVICOM team, led by its National Coordinator, Chief Obe Ad’Obe, visited him in Abuja, said the Corporation would in the coming weeks embark on a pilot scheme to reach depositors literally at their doorsteps.
He said: “We are coming out with what we call Depositors Tracers Initiative, whereby we partner with reputable organisations such as the NYSC to embark on a house-to-house, office-to-office trace of these depositors, using their last known addresses.
“It is going to be a pilot project starting with Lagos, but we will expand and fine-tune it as we go along to ensure it is efficient and cost-effective.
“We also reckoned that there is a problem of information flow in the system, so a lot of these depositors often do not get to hear what is happening with regards to their ‘missing’ deposits. Therefore, we have undertaken to make our depositors’ database more comprehensive and current as well as more accessible by depositors from any part of the world.â€
