Osogbo — Presidential aspirant in the forthcoming election and former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) has described the passing away of Oba Iyiola Oyewale Matanmi III, the Ataoja of Osogbo as very sad, saying the death has left a big vacuum in the annals of history in Yorubaland in general and Osogbo in particular.

In a condolence letter to Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State, the bereaved family and the entire people of the state, Babangida said he received the news with shock because of the very close acquaintances he had with the monarch, who regarded him and his family as part of his (Oba) extended family, especially on the issues of national concern.

According to the content of the letter, “I do not know how to convey to you and the good people of Osun State my hearty condolences over the death of our revered royal father, His Royal Highness Oba Iyiola Oyewale Matanmi III, the Ataoja of Osogbo which sad event happened a few days ago.

“I am at a loss because of the very close acquaintances I had with the respected- royal father who saw me and my family as part of his extended family in the way we related on issues of national concern. His death will no doubt leave a big vacuum in the annals of history in Yorubaland in general and Osogbo in particular.”

“Despite the contending political forces in the state and the sharp contrast between the existing political parties, the Royal Father was able to play the role of a father_figure to all irrespective of the ideological leanings of the various political actors in the State.

“He never allowed politics to override his interest for the people. He was an ideal bridge builder who was distinctive in his role as a mediator. His death therefore has created a vacuum and I have no doubt in my mind that you will use your good judgement to ensure a smooth succession in line with the traditional rites and norms of the people.”

Babangida, however, noted that the encomiums, eulogies and kind words being poured on the departed monarch are living testimonies that he lived a fulfilled life with remarkable achievements and sense of purpose adding that through his spirited effort, he was able to unite the people of Osogbo and its environs by showing leadership by example.

“I wish to register my deep and heart_felt condolences to you at this trying times. I also want to use this medium to convey to the family, my condolences. Given my close relationship with you, the family and the good people of Osun State, I see this death and this mourning period as a shared moment of grief. It is my prayers that the Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercies, will forgive him his sins and grant him paradise in the hereafter,” he prayed.
