Yesterday’s lethal attack on the Yenogoa home of the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Nestor Binabo, is another sickening addition to the orgy of violence eroding the tranquility of the state that prides itself as the Glory of All Lands.

In the last few days, the erstwhile deputy governor of the state, Mr. Peremobowei Ebebi, Chairman of the state Sanitation Authority, Chief Reginald Dede, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Conflict Resolution, Mike Wenibowei have all had their houses attacked by gunmen or sometimes bombed.

The orgy of violence reached the precincts of the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Timipre Sylva last weekend when gunmen attacked his hometown, Okpama in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

The recent attacks in Bayelsa are remarkably not connected to the militant agitation that was at one-time commonplace in the state. Though investigations are supposedly ongoing by the security agencies, it is common saying that the attacks are politically inspired. That fact is underpinned by the series of political instability that has bedevilled the state and robbed it of the glory it supposedly proclaims as its theme.

Given that Bayelsa is the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan, it becomes a matter of greater concern if security is allowed to unravel at a time that the oil rich region is just recovering from a long period of unrest.

The inability of the security agencies to successfully pinpoint the cause of any one of the recent attacks calls for concern.

President Jonathan has remarkably been mute in the face of the persisting confusion. Given the widely believed quest to push his presidency into a fresh term from next year, he has a responsibility to make sure that he puts his backyard at peace.

The President must in that respect move beyond condemning the spate of attacks and push the security agencies concerned to expose those behind the attacks. That is the minimum that is desired from him.
