BENIN—GOVERNOR Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has told senior civil servants in the state that he intends to implement the 2018 budget to the letter and vowed to query any civil servant who failed to respond to memos within 72 hours.

This came as the governor declared that the era of automatic promotion was gone and that workers must earn their promotions, saying: “Promotions will not be delayed. But assessment will be done on time as delay in promoting workers will not be tolerated.”

He spoke when he met with the Head of Service, Permanent Secretaries and other state civil servants on salary grade level 15 to 17 and assured that his administration would boost their capacities and provide health insurance for workers in the state.

Obaseki, who insisted that he wanted to ensure a more efficient and result oriented civil service in Edo State to pursue the objectives of the 2018 budget, said he spent 48 hours responding to memos and mandated senior officials to respond to all memos within 72 hours.

According to him, “I have a dashboard tracker to monitor the response time. Government will issue queries to those who flout this rule, and other areas where officers are found wanting.”
