NGO to mobilise against poor power supply

By Festus Ahon
A non-governmental organisation,  Initiative for Better Power Supply, IBPS, said it will  mobilise Nigerians to the National Assembly to protest against the epileptic power supply in the country, if urgent steps are not taken to address to the problem.
National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Emmanuel Onose, who issued the threat in a chat with newsmen, said the problem of poor electricity supply was adversely affecting the economic life of the people.

He said:  “Personally, I had written lots of letters to the Speaker and other relevant organs of the National Assembly. I had tried all I could but I have got no feedback. We are giving the Speaker more time and  if he does not initiate any action, we are going to mobilise Nigerians, those that are suffering from the electricity failures to protest at the National Assembly, Abuja, so that they know that Nigerians are indeed suffering.

“This issue of poor power supply is affecting every Nigerian. The welders cannot work, smallscale factories cannot work, and big companies are closing down,”the group said.

The government is not aware that the power sector is one of the dividends of democracy they are supposed to bequeath to the people.

“The problem is that these government functionaries, who are supposed to spearhead power supply are hooked 24hours to generators, they do not buy diesel or fuel for generators. They are thereby spending tax payers money, so they do not feel the pain. If you have a generator and you are servicing it with your own money, you will understand the pain, but in their case, they are not spending their money, so they don’t care,” he added.
