The sleepy riverine settlement of Aleibiri in the Ekeremor local government area of Bayelsa State was thrown into confusion in the early hours of yesterday when gunmen armed with explosives and other dangerous weapons attacked the country home of the impeached Deputy Governor, Hon Peremobowei Ebebi with a security guard sustaining serious gunshot injuries.

Though no life was lost in the attack, it was gathered that substance suspected to be dynamite was thrown at his residence, destroying windowpane and other structures.

The night guards on duty Saturday Vanguard learnt jumped the fence to take cover but one of them was not that lucky as he was trailed to where he was hiding inside one of the rooms and shot.

The injured night guard is said to be receiving medical attention at Our Saviour Hospital, Bomadi, Delta State.

The audacious attack on the residence it was learnt occurred at about 12.30am when most of the natives had retired to bed.

The gunmen, sources told Saturday Vanguard, stormed the serene community in four double engine speedboats to launch the attack on the sprawling complex located close to the waterfront.

It was learnt that the sound of the detonated dynamite forced the panic stricken natives to stay indoors for fear of being hit by flying bullets.

The spokesman of the State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Eguavoen Edokpae, confirmed the incident saying the command has dispatched policemen to the scene to take charge of the situation and urged the people to go about their businesses.

He said there was damage to the residence but could not confirm whether there was any casualty as they were still awaiting reports from the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) in charge of the area.

The former deputy governor could not be reached as his mobile telephone line was not going through.
Meanwhile, the state Chairmen of the Action Congress (AC) Comrade Miriki Ebikibina and reacted to the report of the incident with clear condemnation of the act and asked the police authority to investigate the incident with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.
