CSCS boss, others bag IOD fellowship

Managing Director of the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS), Mr. Onyewuchi Asinobi, Vice Chairman Skye Bank Plc, Mrs. Morenike Onasanya,  Otunba Solomon Oladunni,  former Executive Vice Chairman of Mobil Producing Nigeria and four others have been inducted as fellows of the Institute of Directors (IOD), Nigeria.

According to a statement by the IOD, the award is in recognition of the outstanding contributions of the individuals to the business community and the society at large.

Speaking at the 2010 Annual Fellows’ Evening of the Institute, Mr. Chike Nwanze, President IOD, noted that the Institute confers fellowship annually on deserving members who have served in varying capacities and have made notable contributions to the business community.

He also charged the newly inducted fellows to remain focused and committed to the ideals of the Institute.
Also speaking, in an address titled ‘The Challenge of our Time — Adding Value to Life’, Mr. Felix Ohiwerei, former Chairman, Nigerian Breweries Plc, who was guest speaker at the induction ceremony, reminded directors that whatever they do affects not just themselves, but their families and the nation.

He describing Nigeria as an enigma — well-endowed but poor, lamenting the fact that Nigeria cannot effectively manage her resources because of our wrong attitude to life.

“The attitude is what can I take from society rather than what can I give or what can I do to improve the society”, he said, wondering how different it would be if everybody tried to add value instead of “take-what-you-can-when-you-have-the-opportunity-attitude”.

Ohiwerei called for the re-examination of personal goals, attitude to the family, to colleagues at work, to the local community and to the nation, as this will help ensure a change in societal attitude.

He said, “From what we hear, it would appear that the goal of most people in positions of authority is to use their positions to enrich themselves at the expense of the society.

“Corruption has given rise to armed robbery and insecurity of life and property, the rich cannot even enjoy their wealth. The fat bank accounts outside Nigeria enrich the banks.
“These people cause suffering at home and water the fields in foreign lands”. He lamented.
He further stated that adding value to the family is vital to building a successful nation, adding that the first thing to do is to lead our children in “the way of God”.

He urged directors to be available at home to mould the character of their children. He described the home as the launching pad of the child into the world warning that directors must pay as much attention to character-building as they do to education.

“The ills in today’s society can be traced to this gaping gap in the upbringing of children; the missing value must be brought back to centre stage by parents”, he warned.
