All is certainly not well with the Flying Antelopes of Enugu. The side which started the just concluded Globacom Premier league season like a house on fire, fizzled out when it mattered most as a result of financial problems.
The six-time league champions, it was gathered, failed to impress in the later part of the season due to failure on the part of the state government to meet up the club’s financial obligations.
It was gathered that the State governor, Sullivan Chime approved the proposal sent to him by the club but the release of the fund became a problem.
“It is unbelievable the money approved by the governor is yet to be released. The governor travelled out of the country and we had to meet the SSG who said we should appeal to the players to play, stressing that when the governor returns from his trip, they will pay.
“Rangers is owing its players 12 games bonuses and lack of fund was equally responsible for the team’s lackluster finish in the just concluded league season. “Now the players are threatening not to honour the FA Cup final because they have not been paid.
The club managed to pay three games bonuses to reduce it to 12. The club was initially owing the players 15 games allowanceâ€, our source said.
According to our source, match allowances for the just ended season has not been approved. The team had to borrow money to prosecute the leagueâ€â€œLife here in Enugu has been tough, we are managing to survive. I wonders they want us to surviveâ€, a player said.
