Prominent indigenes of Enugu-North zone of Enugu State have explained why they made a U-turn on the zone’s agitation for governorship slot in 2011 to support  Governor Sullivan Chime for second term in office.

The Secretary of Marshal Seven Club and its spokesman, Chief Lazarus Ogbonna in an interview with Saturday Vanguard advised governorship candidates from the area to wait till 2015, saying that it is in the best political interest of the zone to support Governor Chime to enable the zone have a smooth sail in 2015 without political encumbrance.

He added it is most reasonable for the zone to allow the governor complete his second term before going for the number one office in the state.

Chief Ogbonna maintained that the group led by Chief Fidelis Ezema and which is made up of members  from Uzo-Uwani, Igbo-Etiti, Udenu, Nsukka Urban, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South and Isi-Uzor local councils has decided to support Governor Chime for a second term.

Ogbonna said: “it may be surprising to you that we, in Nsukka Senatorial District, want Governor Sullivan Chime re-elected in 2011. My group is in the forefront of this campaign and it is very simple.

From the political setting of Enugu, we know that Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo from Enugu East ran a term in office from 1979 to 1983 and after him was Chief C. C. Onoh of blessed memory who won election under NPN, even though his tenure was aborted. Onoh was from Enugu West.

And much later, current Peoples democratic Party chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo who emerged from Enugu North and if you take account of the order, it has always started from Enugu East.”
