ENUGU—FIVE persons have been apprehended by the police in Enugu for allegedly producing fake gubernatorial campaign posters of the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu.

The suspects, who are being quizzed by operatives of the Criminal Investigations Department, CID, it was learnt, have reportedly named a former member of the National Assembly (names withheld) as one of the producers of the fake posters.

Chief Ekweremadu raised an alarm through his Special Assistant on Communication, Mr. Luke Mgbor, in Enugu yesterday that the posters were produced by some political mischief makers in the state to destabilize the existing peace and stability in the state.

Several copies of the fake posters bearing Ekweremadu’s portrait had been pasted at strategic places in the Coal city before the suspects were nabbed with a large number of the posters yet to be pasted.

A statement signed by Mr. Mgbor said: “These mischievous political jobbers have been going about pasting fake gubernatorial posters of the deputy president of the Senate along the streets of Enugu suggesting that Chief Ike Ekweremadu, is interested in the gubernatorial seat of the state.

“Unfortunately for them, they were apprehended by the police and are currently chatting with them. Four of the suspects have started mentioning names of their sponsors.  However, the police have vowed to get to the root of the matter.”

It would be recalled that Ekweremadu had repeatedly explained that he was not interested in the gubernatorial seat in Enugu State and that decision, according to the Special Assistant, has not changed.

He, however, advised the general public and the  people of Enugu State to discountenance the fake posters and continue to maintain and promote the existing peace and stability in the state.
