ABUJA— THE Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu yesterday assured agitators of new states that the Senate will set up a committee to look into all the demands for state creation before it.

Senator Ekweremadu who spoke while receiving delegations of movement for the creation of Anioma State at the National Assembly said the Senate is committed to creating new states because it will bring government closer to the people.

He said, “from the experiences we have gathered so far from the states that have been created, that is the only way that government can be closer to the people. The Federal Government is far removed from the people, and it is only when you have many states that the government will be close to the people.

“As soon as we get responses from the State Houses of Assembly on the amendments to the 1999 Constitution, we will set up a sub committee to look at all the requests for state creation and turn it over to the Senate for consideration.”
