Anambra communities get N88.5m for security beef up

By Vincent Ujumadu

AWKA— GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State yesterday handed over cheques of N500, 000.00 to each of the 177 communities in the state, which amounts to N88.5 million, to enable them beef up security in their areas.

The Governor, who gave them the money during a meeting with all the traditional rulers and town union presidents in Anambra at the Women Development Centre Awka, said the state government and people of Anambra State would not rest until the issue of security, which he described as his number one priority, was comprehensively addressed.

He called on all the towns to set up vigilante groups, which must be under the police that would provide them with uniforms for proper identification.

He, however, observed that since his warning to traditional rulers that they would be held responsible for crimes in their domains, there had been a decrease in crime rate in the state, but called on them to do more since, according to him, “those criminals live among us.”
