On Saturday against Argentina, Nigeria will be the underdogs and not under pressure to win, according to Super Eagles stars.
“We will not be under pressure, rather Argentina are the ones under pressure to win this match,†Everton striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who will be making his World Cup debut in South Africa, told MTNFootball.com.
“We’re the underdogs, many don’t give us a chance. But we will go out there to give everything and enjoy ourselves.
“We should also note that Argentina are not the only team in our group. We also have to contend with Greece and South Korea.â€
“There will be surprises at this World Cup,†added Nigeria skipper Nwankwo Kanu.“Argentina are a big football country, but all the same, we won’t lie down and die when we come up against them. I expect an interesting game with the result to determine the final standings in our group because your first game is very important.â€
Nigeria can draw inspiration from the unpredictability of the game from fellow Africans, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, who upset the then defending champions Argentina in the opening match of Italia ’90.
“In football, anything can happen. You cannot afford to write off Nigeria because we also have quality players in our ranks who are determined to win,†insisted Yakubu.“We will take it a game a time, while our immediate target would be to reach the knockout stage.â€
