OWERRI — Imo State House of Assembly will, Friday, mark its 2nd parliament day with a public lecture to be delivered by South African Speaker of Guateng Legislature, Mr. Lindiwe Maseko.

The ceremony coincides with the third anniversary of the 27-member House, and the presentation of a book written in honour of the Speaker, Chief Goodluck Nanah Opiah.

Governor Ikedi Ohakim will be the Special Guest of Honour, while former Speaker of the House, Mr.  Godfrey Dikeocha, will chair the occasion.

The annual parliament day was instituted last year as a forum of interaction among serving and former national and state legislators from Imo State.

The Parliament Day affords the legislators room to compare notes and build upon their capacity for quality legislation,” Emeana explained.

It was the considered opinion of the lawmaker that the quality of legislation in Imo Assembly took a leap last year as a result of capacity workshops held both locally and internationally.

“Our capacity building drive saw us go through many training sessions both here and abroad, including but not limited to, such great democracies as United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, India and South Africa,” it noted.

He said that “within the year, a total of 37 motions were presented with 23 passed, one rejected, two stepped down, while one is pending. Similarly, 32 bills were presented with 10 passed into law, one consolidated, two adjourned sine die and 17 pending”.
