Presidency, PDP force Ag. Chairman, Bello, to quit

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA— THERE were very strong indications, yesterday, that barely 36 days after the National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, resigned, his deputy, Dr. Haliru Bello, will also throw in the towel immediately after the meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, tomorrow.

According to sources, the Presidency and the PDP caucus were not happy that those saddled with the responsibility of leadership are those with burden of corruption, just as they were of the view that the Deputy National Chairman, who is now acting, does not have what it takes to lead the party.

One of the sources stressed that his resignation like that of Ogbulafor and the PDP Board of Trustees, BoT Secretary and former governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji  Abdullahi Adamu, would pave way for the embattled ex-Customs boss to face corruption allegations, even as the caucus of the party was of the opinion that his continued stay in office will be a huge embarrassment to a party that claims to be the largest in Africa as well as that which produced a government that propagates rule of law, transparency and accountability.

The Acting PDP National Chairman is facing charges levelled against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, as well as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over the N238 million Siemens scam instituted against him, offence that was said to have been committed when he was Minister of Communications.

Giving a breakdown of the Siemen bribery scandal by the People United for Human Rights and posted to the correspondent’s email, Bello, who is number seven and eight on the mail, was alleged to have been given 150,000.00 euros Seidel on 25/8/2003, 550,000 euros Seidel/Apexpost on 8/07/2002.
