 Asaba -The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) rose from its 4th quadrennial delegates conference in Asaba,, weekend, authorising its members in four states  of the federation to resume their suspended strike over nonpayment of 27.5 percent allowances.

 The Union also asked the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, “such that education would be given its pride of place”.

The affected states are Rivers, Abia, Oyo and Plateau. The order calling for the resumption of strike was contained in an 11 page communique read out by the newly elected National President of the union, Mr. Michael Olukioya Alogba.

The Conference also called on the National Assembly “to use the current constitutional amendment process to remove education particularly the Basic and Secondary education to the exclusive sector from the concurrent legislative list as provided in chapter two under the principle objective policy of the state in 1999 Nigerian Constitution”.
