Disengaged staff of moribund Delta Steel Company, DSC, Ovwian/Aladja, Udu Local Government Aarea, Delta State, have said that the Assets Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON, only paid them 22.5 per cent of what they are being owed.
The disengaged staff condemned the publication of the payment of 22.5 per cent in the media when many of their members had died waiting in vain for the payment.
One of the affected staff, John Okari, who spoke with Vanguard, said though they were happy that some of their colleagues got part of their entitlements, the payment should be made in full.
Okari noted that not all the affected staff were paid in the just completed exercise, pointing out that he, who worked in DSC under the management of Global Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, GINL, did not get a kobo.
He explained that the publication of the 22.5 percent payment in the media was causing agitation among the affected staff and called on AMCON to let the nation know the truth.
According to him, “AMCON decided to pay only 22.5 per cent of what Global is owing the workers. They still owe the workers over 77 per cent. They are trying to play divide and rule tactics which will not work.”
It will be recalled that the arrears accumulated when GINL, acquired DSC and failed to liquidate its huge debts to some banks, resulting in the takeover of the company by AMCON.
The payment of arrears, which began last week, has seen 1,545 of the total of 1,682 screened beneficiaries receive cheques ranging from N100,000 to over N2 million, depending on the level of the staff and the nature of engagement.
