NDDC: We’re moving from building shore protection to constructing road networks – Project Director

By Tare Youdeowei

Executive Director, Project, of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mr. Samuel Adjogbe, has stated that the commission was moving away from the era of failed shore protection projects to constructing motorable roads to link the riverine communities in the region.

He also said that the commission was setting up a body to profile all failed project contractors and recommend measures to recover funds already paid to such contractors.

Adjogbe made the disclosure in Warri at a chat during a public lecture organised by the Nigerian  Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Warri chapter.

According to him, when roads are constructed to link the various riverine communities in the region, developers would then take advantage of the access roads to reclaim the land and build estates and business empires to open up the areas, adding that the shore protection is as capital intensive as the road construction.

He expressed regret that shore protection and most reclamation projects were often abandoned after contractors have collected mobilization, adding that the commission was set to recover all such mobilization fees from defaulters.
