ONITSHA—Thirty-one liaison officers in the 21 local government areas of Anambra state are facing hard times following the non payment of their salaries, furniture allowances and severance allowances estimated at N40.3 million.

The liaison officers, who spoke to Vanguard yesterday said they were being owed for almost 18 months  by  Anambra state government.

The worrisome aspect of it, the group complained, was that they were at a loss since they have not been told verbally or in writing that they have been sacked, as they were no longer working in their respective offices.

They said all their efforts to prevail on government to pay their entitlements have proved abortive.

“Our children no longer go to school because we cannot pay their school fees. We are appealing to Governor Willie Obiano to look into our plight.

“We are being treated as second class citizens in a state we also have a stake like every Anambra person”.

The group said they were grassroot politicians and were really in touch with the people in the rural areas.

“We are the people supporting the governor but unfortunately, most of his aides are deceiving him by not telling him the truth about the happenings in the villages and communities”

They stated in unequivocal terms that they would not support the governor if he failed to pay their entitlements.

“Election is around the corner and that may throw him up for a second tenure. We may not guarantee his second tenure if he does not pay us. But if he ( the governor) pays and carries us along, we will support him and  make sure he wins in the scheduled November 18, governorship election in the state.
