A Pentagon plan for stepping up the U.S. fight against Islamic State has been sent to the White House, spokesperson, Jeff Davis, said on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump had requested the review of U.S. strategy after taking office in January.

The recommendations encompass a broad strategy, including diplomatic efforts, Davis said, without providing details of the classified document.

U.S. Defence Secretary James Mattis will brief members of the White House’s National Security Council on the recommendations later Monday.

Trump had repeatedly vowed to defeat the radical Islamist group throughout his presidential campaign and criticised the administration of his predecessor, Barack Obama, for not having already done so.
