BENIN—THE organised labour in Edo State, has threatened to down tools if Governor Godwin Obaseki fails to meet its demands within seven days, saying that labour was rejecting the alleged implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme as it was illegal.
The labour movement made up of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC and Joint Negotiation Council, JNC, issued the ultimatum at an enlarged State Executive Council meeting in Benin City.
Reacting to the threat, yesterday, interim Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, John Mayaki, said that the governor will address the issue soon.
In the statement, labour said that the alleged implementation of the contributory pension scheme was done in “flagrant and total disregard of due process and the rule of law,” asking the governor to urgently stop what it described as the unlawful deductions from workers and maintain status quo in the interest of justice.
The state NLC Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Ademoku, who addressed journalists on the issue, alleged that the state government had refused to use the N11.3 billion Paris Club refund for the payment of outstanding workers’ pension and emolument.
