Bauchi—The Head of Mass Communication Department, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Dr. Hassan Hassan, has decried the ratio of female teachers to that of male in the state, saying that dearth of female teachers in the rural areas is hindering the enrolment of the girl-child in schools.

Hassan stated this  while making a presentation on Education Citizens Report in Local Rights, organised by the FAHIMTA Women and Youths Development Initiative in collaboration with Action Aid Nigeria in Bauchi.

He said that Bauchi State has a total of 18,856 teachers, out of which 14,158 are males, while 4,098 are females.

Hassan regretted that the Teacher’s Service in the state was not gender sensitive, pointing out that the development had  discouraged parents from sending girls to school.

He said: “The discrimination against girls’ education persists in the state because of customary attitudes, child marriages, religious misconception, inadequate and gender-biased teaching, educa-tional materials and lack of adequate accessible schooling facilities.

“Girls’ school enrolment figures in the state has continued to attest to below average enrolment, retention and completion leading up to the junior secondary and senior secondary levels.”
