It was over salaries — Aupctre President

ENUGU—The South-East zonal office of Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Commission, ICPC, yesterday, quizzed officials of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees, AUPCTRE, in Enugu.

Those interrogated for hours by the ICPC were the President of the union, Solomon Adelegan and General Secretary, Leke Zambuk.

Adelegan, after he came out from the commission’s office, told Vanguard that they were at the ICPC in respect of the backlog of salaries owed union members in Anambra State for years, which they went to court and obtained favourable judgment, giving the union access to money to pay the workers directly.

According to him, the union had been able to pay over 1,800 of the workers, remaining a few which the union was paying, when the ICPC invitation came, alleging some violations of the law.

Though Adelegan said he was not told who wrote the petition against them, he said he suspected some union members who had not received their money.

According to him, those yet to get their salaries were those that were yet to tender relevant documents to enable them receive their salaries.

He said the union was asking for the relevant documents to verify those still alive so that the money would not go to the wrong hands.

The zonal commissioner for ICPC, Prince Hassan Mohammed, confirmed the union leaders appearance, but did not give details of their interaction.
