Bayelsa governorship poll

THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has provided special polling units to ensure that Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) are not disenfranchised in the November 26 governorship election.

Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, said this in Akure at the “Leave No One Behind: Disability Votes Count” campaign.

Agbaje said apart from the special polling units that would be strategically located for easy accessibility to the people, pregnant women would also be taken care of during the voting exercise to reduce undue stress.

He spoke as the Chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers, Mrs.  Bunmi Arajuwa, lamented that women often lag behind in electoral processes and need more encouragement to excel.

Arajuwa spoke during Stop Violence Against Women In Electoral, VAWIE, campaign recently in Irele council area of the state.

According to her, women should be united and participate fully in electoral processes because they form the largest percentage of voters and citizens in the country.

The chairperson of Women Development Initiative (WADI), Mrs. Florence Ajih, who advised African women to be submissive to their husbands to get what they want, urged that priority should be given to the physically challenged as their votes also count.

One of the participants, the Iya Oloja of Irele Local Government, Chief Mrs. Oye Olowo,  pleaded with parents to send their female children to school to enhance participation of women in elections and governance.
