The Federal and Lagos State governments are currently working out modalities to relocate the 61 year-old Ikoyi Prison.

Vanguard learnt that this is aimed at upgrading the prison’s facilities and ensure effective justice system in the country.

This came as the government reiterated warning to residents against construction of structures within the setbacks for canals in the state, even as it demolished about 20 structures in Ikoyi axis of the state.

It was gathered that the planned relocation of the prison, which was built in 1955 with a capacity for 800 inmates, became necessary following incessant pollution among others.

Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Samuel Adejare, disclosed this weekend in an chat with newsmen after monitoring the October edition of the monthly sanitation exercise in Ikoyi-Obalende, Local Council Development Area,  with the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe.
