Gov’s Cup Tennis: Ex-champs win Futures 5

Former champions, Enrique Perez of Spain and Tadeja Majeric of Slovakia have won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively of the Lagos Governor’s Cup Futures 5.

In the final matches held on the Centre Court of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, top seed Perez, winner in 2012, rolled back the years to defeat Gianni Mina in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, to land his second singles crown of the longest-running Futures event in sub-sahara Africa.

In the women’s final, Majeric, winner in 2013 and 2015 losing finalists, showed the stuff champions are made off in her 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 of Swiss Conny Perrin.

Both winners said they were looking to add the second week singles titled to their trophy cabinet.

“I’m happy winning this again. I  was runner-up last year. There’s no doubt Conny was a tough player. She took the first set, I had to fight back to win the other two sets. This is a great tournament for us and I’m glad to be here again, as this is my fifth time in Lagos. For the second week, it is not yet over getting double victory will be good for my game and ranking in the world, “ Majeric said.

In the women’s doubles final, Chayenne  Ewijk and Rosalie Van Der Hoek from The Netherlands beat the pair of Valetini Grammatikopoulou from Greece and Indian Prarthana Thombare in straight set of 6-3,7-5

The men’s doubles final was won by Enrique Perez of Spain and Boy Westerhof from The Netherlands. They defeated France’s Calvin Hemery and Gianni Mina in two sets 6-2,6-3.
