It was a good day at the office for Nigerian players bidding for the Governor’s Cup title, as no fewer than four of them qualified for the second round of the Futures 5 tournament holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikna.
Davis Cup seed, Clifford Enosoregbe was the first home player to progress, stopping in his wake Delmas N’Tcha of Benin Republic in two set 6-3,6-2, followed by Sylvester Emmanuel, who defeated compatriot Ikechukwu Iloputa in quick sets 6-1,6-3, even as Henry Atseye joined the wining train, with an hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 victory over Joseph Imeh Ubon.
Edward Christopher Anefu completed the Nigerian victory parade, beating Mohammed Mohammed 6-1,6-2 all another men’s singles match, witnessed by a handful of tennis fans at the Lagos |Lawn Tennis Club in Central Lagos.
But for other Nigerians, they were not so lucky as they bid farewell to the Futures 5 in familiar fashion , falling at the very first time of asking to their foreign opponents, with Christian Paul being the biggest casualty , losing 4-6, 3-6 to eight seed, Maciej Smola of Poland while Christopher Bulus 6-2,6-3. also found himself on the back foot, falling 2-6, 3-6 to Ugandan Duncan Mugabe.
