Bauchi—World Health Organisation, WHO, has said no fewer than 1,472 cases of non-compliance to polio immunisation was reported in Bauchi State this month.

State Consultant for WHO, Dr. Habu Dahiru, disclosed this yesterday during a one-day workshop for women journalists on update of polio immunisation, organised by National Primary Health Care Development Agency at the State National Emergency Centre in Bauchi.

He said since Nigeria was de-listed as non-endemic country in 2013, cases of non-compliance began to rise after a very long time.

According to the consultant, factors such as religious beliefs, sick children, political differences, hostility towards health workers and oral polio vaccine safety are responsible for why most people rejected polio immunisation in their host communities.

Dahiru said as the state was making preparations to receive internally displaced persons, IDPs, the state Primary Health Care Development Agency would ensure that major implementation plans, such as border synchronisation among neighbouring states, task force review meetings, social mobilisation activities and release of funds, were put in place to forestall any outbreak of the polio virus.
