Rivers assembly staff threatens strike action over unpaid allowances

By Jimitota Onoyume

PORT HARCOURT—  Members of Rivers State House of Assembly chapter of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, have given notice of strike from October 24, over unpaid allowances.

Chairman of the body, Mr Louis Okeleke, who spoke with  newsmen, said that the speaker of the House of Assembly,  Mr Adams Daborudima sent assurances to them at one of their meetings that the matter would be  resolved soonest, but that  they decided  to proceed on strike if the allowances which include outfit allowances were not cleared.

According to him, some of the allowances had not been paid since 2013.

His words “At the instance of the national body of PASAN, we held a congress and while the congress was on, a delegation from the Speaker arrived, and  pleaded that they would pay us within a short time. So we adjourned to October 24, by which time the one month grace must have expired and if nothing is on ground, we would proceed with the necessary actions.”
