ABEOKUTA—Hundreds of students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, went home disappointed yesterday, during the on-going second semester examinations as lecturers commenced “sit-at-home” directive in protest over 23 months unpaid subvention arrears owed the university by the state government.

The state government was said to be owing them 23 months unpaid subvention arrears worth N3.5 billion.

The students, who had arrived the school for the semester examination which began last week, returned home in disappointment and frustration as there were no lecturers to supervise or invigilate the examinations.

The lecturers elected to adopt a “sit-at-home” approach following a decision reached at the conclusion of the Congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OOU chapter, yesterday at the institution’s permanent site.

OOU-ASUU Chairman, Dr. Deji Agboola, who addressed newsmen, said members have decided to stop further activities until the state government urgently pay the subvention arrears totalling N3.5 billion.

The action, according to Agboola, would affect the on-going second semester examination.
