N100m land dispute: Judge frowns at charge against bizwoman

By Onozure Dania

Lagos—Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of a Lagos High Court sitting at Ikeja has said that a charge bordering on land theft before her which a business woman, Mrs Moji Yakubu is being allegedly prosecuted  ought to have been land trespass.

The business woman claimed that she bought the 10 hectares of land for N100million, from the Onibeju Royal Family, located at Sangotedo, and that a deed of assignment was duly executed by both parties, that she is now being accused of stealing.

She alleged that one Miss Folashade Ogundare whom the family had withdrawn the power of attorney over the piece of land from which is now in contention, has been using some Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC officials to harass her and also to charge her for stealing a land that she bought.

Yakubu through her lawyer Mr Yemi Adeshina said that trouble started when the family alleged that Ogundare  defrauded them of N4 billion, the matter took a different twist as the family members who took the matter to the EFCC became the suspects.

Adeshina also alleged that EFCC last year charged his client with an 11 count criminal charge of stealing alongside nine members of the Onibeju family.

While the decision of the court is pending, Mr Adeshina stated that the commission secretly went before another court and obtained a suspicious injunction for temporary forfeiture of her Monan Garden Estate land located in Lekki.

In a move to further intimidate Mrs Yakubu, he said that the commission further proceeded to freeze his client’s company, Monan Trading Company Ltd, account without a valid order from any court.
