WARRI—THE Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has given Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, seven days to restore power supply to Udu Local Government Area, Delta State.
The ultimatum is contained in a letter to the Managing Director of BEDC expressing the association’s anger on the blackout which it termed punitive.
The letter by Chairman and Secretary, NBA Udu Branch, Ballantyrne Ugege and O. Imonina, said that the action of BEDC in reaction to the protest by Udu women against erratic power supply and agonising power consumption bills was an affront to the rule of law.
The association described the action by BEDC as, “Unwholesome, uncivilized and an abuse of privilege and power by staff of the firm.
“As a result of the near absence of electricity supply in a particular area in one of the communities in Udu, women from that area carried out a peaceful protest.
“To us, if anything unlawful was done to BEDC, there are appropriate legal channels to follow instead of resorting to throwing the whole of Udu into total darkness.”
