EBUBU — THE people of Ebubu community, Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, have appealed to the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in the state, to call off its resolution not to post corps members to the area.

A community leader from the area, Chief Ambrose Yaya, said that NYSC authorities in the state, alleging insecurity and threat to life of corps members, withdrew those posted to the community because criminals robbed them thrice, last year.

Chief Yaya, however, pleaded with NYSC to resume posting of corps members to the community, saying the people had set up a security committee to protect the Corpers’ Lodge and would guarantee their safety.

“We assure them that corps members will be safe, but we, as the community leaders have made efforts, written letters to the NYSC authorities appealing to them to return the NYSC members,” he said.

A senior official informed Niger Delta Voice that the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Ngozi Nwantareli, was away on official assignment when our reporter visited the Port Harcourt office for comment, adding.

The officer said that NYSC also took similar decision on Omuma community after some unknown persons took five female corps members hostage in 2010.

“The safety of corps members is of importance to NYSC. Therefore, when communities cannot stop their people from kidnapping and robbing them, we have no choice but to withdraw them until when they promise to secure their lives before we can post corps members to them,” he asserted.
