SERIES of free surgeries on health issues such as a swollen appendix, hernia, male circumcision, cleft lip and cleft palate among others are to be  conducted for indigent patients as no less than 1,000 General Practitioners gather in Abuja.

The activity is being facilitated under under the aegis of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria, AGPMPN, that is collaborating with the Association of Rural Surgeons and the Rotary Club to facilitate free operations as part of their 38th AGM and Scientific Conference which opens today.

Themed “Communicable Diseases” will dwell  encompasses topics such as malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV, cancer screening, as well as Medical missions to Nigeria, as sub-themes.

Spokesperson for the Association, Dr. Biodun Ogungbo, stated that the the Public Health department of the Federal Ministry of Health as well as Teaching Hospitals, cutting edge pharmaceutical companies, research centres and non-governmental organisations are billed to partake in providing the educational content and health advocacy of benefit to the Nigerian public.

“The GPs would be in Abuja to listen to information of relevance to the health of the nation. We are all ears waiting for the delivery of pertinent health advocacy through highly trained and well placed lecturers in health research, economics and clinical practice.

He said vital information that would help reduce misdiagnosis and delays in treatment of illnesses such as malaria, typhoid will be discussed while messages and information on the importance of encouraging young people to check their HIV status will be relayed.

Ogungbo said the role of medical missions would also be examined towards assuring sustainability through partnership with the AGPMPN.
