A CALL has been made by the, GM/CEO Lagos Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Engr. Adebola Shabi, for the input of Environmental Education into the school curriculum, particularly primary schools.
Speaking on behalf of conferred Fellows of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation (SEPTOM) at the 2015 International Conference of the Society at University of Lagos, Shabi said; “All of us need to show love to the environment.
In the past our forefathers showed love to the environment that is why we are enjoying today. But we have not been showing enough love to the environment, what are we going to leave for the next generation? We need to catch them young. We need to inculcate environmental education into the curriculum of children even from primary school.”
Giving a basis for his claim, Engr Shabi provided; “I did a survey sometime ago and discovered that only few Nigerians know what environmental protection is. That is why everywhere in this country is highly polluted. We just need to love the environment more.”
In its bid to encourage environmental education, SETPOM’s President, Dr. Funmilayo Doherty said; “We have introduced the Free Empowerment Workshop on Environmental Auditing. This took place on the second day of the conference.
Experts from the industry and academics facilitated the workshop. Certificates were issued to the student participants at the end of the workshop. We believe this will increase their knowledge in the field of environmental management and add value to their education.”
